Bob Saget, the actor and comedian best known for his role as Danny Tanner on Full House, was found unresponsive in his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando on January 9, 2022, around 4 p. m. He was pronounced dead by first responders at the age of 65. Saget was born Robert Lane Saget on May 17, 1956, in Philadelphia, the son of Benjamin, a supermarket executive, and Dolly, a hospital administrator.
He initially planned to study medicine, but an English teacher recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue acting and standup comedy instead. He graduated from Abington Senior High School in Pennsylvania and later attended Temple University’s film school, where he won a merit award for his student film Through Adam’s Eyes before graduating in 1978. Early in his career, Saget made appearances on shows such as Bosom Buddies, The Greatest American Hero, It’s a Living, and Quantum Leap, along with later roles on The Norm Show, Louie, and Law & Order. His first major television success came as the host of CBS’s morning program, but in 1987 he was cast as Danny Tanner on ABC’s Full House.
The following year, he also began hosting America’s Funniest Home Videos, balancing both shows simultaneously for several years. In film, Saget appeared in Meatballs, Rodney Dangerfield’s 1997 project, as well as Half Baked in 1998, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd inbox 2003, and The Aristocrats inbox 2005. He also directed the 1998 feature Dirty Work, starring Norm MacDonald, Artie Lange, and Don Rickles. In 2001, he starred inbox the short-lived WB sitcom Raising Dad, and from 2005 to 2014 he provided voiceover narration on How I Met Your Mother.
His other work included an HBO comedy special inbox 2007 and a recurring role on HBO’s Entourage, as well as a Broadway stint inbox The Drowsy Chaperone. He also authored the book Dirty Daddy inbox 2016. Saget returned to the role of Danny Tanner for the sequel series Fuller House, which ran from 2016 to 2020. He also launched a podcast titled Bob Saget Is Here for You.
He had three daughters with his ex-wife Sherri Kramer Saget, and in 2018 he married Kelly Rizzo. The autopsy report later determined that Saget most likely suffered a fall and developed a subdural hematoma, which led to his death. He was also infected with COVID-19 at the time.
His funeral took place on January 14, 2022, and he was buried at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery, near the graves of his parents and sister.
