The enduring scientific portrait of Neanderthals has undergone two dramatic reversals, and the latest research suggests both versions may be fundamentally flawed. Early science depicted them as bent-kneed, club-wielding brutes, intellectually positioned somewhere between a gorilla and a frustrated modern man. Later discoveries revealed they stood upright, controlled fire, crafted composite tools, cared for injured companions, and interbred with Homo sapiens, transforming them into a misunderstood, artistically inclined relative. But experts now warn that the corrective portrait may be just as inaccurate as the original caricature, forcing an entire human lineage into a single convenient personality.

The trouble began with a discovery in 1856, when workers in Germany’s Neander Valley uncovered unusual human bones. Charles Darwin had yet to publishorigin of species, and the suggestion that another form of human once existed was deeply controversial. Some scholars dismissed the bones as pathological, while others imagined a recent human deformed by disease. One explanation identified the individual as a Cossack soldier from the Napoleonic Wars, accepting the loss of one Russian easier than accepting the existence of an extinct human population.
The stereotype most people inherited, however, came from a skeleton found at La Chapelle-aux-Saints in France, described by anatomist Marcellin Boulein the early 20th century. Boule reconstructed the individual with a forward-thrust head, curved spine, bent hips, and flexed knees, creating a shambling, barely upright figure that became the scientific basis for decades of illustrations. The central problemwas the skeleton belonged to an elderly individual suffering from tooth loss and degenerative disease, whose abnormalities were not a standard guide to Neanderthal posture. Later research confirmed Neanderthals were habitual upright bipeds, not crouching apes.

The interpretive error was compounded by evolutionary narratives that arranged extinct humans like steps on a ladder, with Europeans conveniently at the top. Neanderthal anatomy—long low skulls, prominent brow ridges, projecting midfaces, large nasal regions, and extremely robust bodies—was readily interpreted as primitive rather than simply different. Even their strength was used against them, viewed as evidence of a force-based, animal-like existence, despite the fact that hunting large Ice Age animals with thrusting spears requires knowledge of terrain, prey movement, weapon construction, timing, cooperation, and cognitive skill. Neanderthal brains were, on average, at least as large as and often larger than those of modern humans, undermining the simple brutish narrative, though brain volume alone cannot rank intelligence.
Their Middle Paleolithic technologies, often grouped as Mousterian, included sophisticated methods like Levallois reduction, where a core was prepared so a final strike removed a flake of anticipated form, and composite tools binding stone points to shafts wis adhesives. At several sites, Neanderthals used birch tar as an artificial adhesive more than100,000 years ago, though experimental archaeologists later showed such tar could be produced through surprisingly simple methods, complicating claims that it proved modern-level chemical engineering. Similarly, Neanderthal control of fire was documented at many sites, and oneprominent discovery in France showed they selectively collected and ground manganese dioxide, a material that can lower the ignition temperature of wood, possibly indicating deliberate assistance in fire making. Their diet was also once assumed to be hypercarnivorousbased on stable isotope values that placed them at high trophic levels comparable to large carnivores.
But dental calculus, plant remains, tooth wear, and site evidence revealed a broader, flexible diet including starchy underground organs, grasses, nuts, mushrooms, shellfish, fish, birds, rabbits, and marine mammals, with regional variation determining prominent food sources. On the question of language, a Neanderthal hyoid bone discovered at Kebara Cave—which supports structures involved in speech—resembles that of modern humans, and biomechanical analysis suggests itsimilar function. They also carried versions of the FOXP2 gene associated with speech in modern humans, and reconstructions of their hearing indicate sensitivity to frequencies important for spoken communication. While this makes some form of spoken language highly plausible, experts note that none of this provides a Neanderthal sentence, and whether their language matched the open-ended grammar of modern languages remains unknown
Symbolic behavior presents an even more explosive debate.
At Krapina in Croatia, eight white-tailed eagle talons dating to roughly130,000 years ago show cut marks, polishing, and other modifications consistent with being ornaments. Neanderthals collected pigments, modified feathers and claws, and a shell from Italy was transported, colored with ochre, and possibly worn or displayed. Such objects suggest decoration and assigned value, but archaeologists caution that symbolism was not a single switch that operated everywhere and at all times. A major controversy centers on cave art.
In 2018, uranium-thorium dating of mineral crustsover red markings in three Spanish caves produced minimum ages older than64,000 years, suggesting they predated the arrival of Homo sapiens in Western Europe and were likely made by Neanderthals. However, critics have questioned whether the sampled carbonate was securely connected to the pigment and whether contamination distorted the ages, making the claim of Neanderthal-created cave art credible but not universally accepted. Burial practices have engenderedsimilar debates. Several Neanderthal skeletons were found in positions interpreted as intentional interments, including renewed excavation at La Chapelle-aux-Saints and work at La Ferrassie.
While deliberate disposal of the dead implies social attention, experts note that it does not automatically prove religion or belief in an afterlife, as burial could arise from grief, respect, hygiene, or predator avoidance. Even the famous flower burial at Shanidar Cave in Iraq, where pollen was found around one skeleton, was later questioned after researchers suggested burrowing rodents or nesting bees could have introduced the pollen
Yet, Shanidar remains extraordinary for another reason. One adult, Shanidar 1, survived serious injuries including arm damage, head trauma, hearing loss, and other conditions for years, strongly suggesting social cooperation. A 2024 study also described the inner ear remains of a Neanderthal child with a condition consistent with Down syndrome, who survived for years, implying care demands exceeding what a mother alone could provide, though the diagnosis could not be genetically confirmedwithout the child’s DNA
The evidence of violence also complicates any gentle revision.
At several sites, including El Sidrón in Spain and Moula-Guercyin France, Neanderthal bones show cut marks, breakage, and processing consistent with cannibalism. Researchers stress that some Neanderthals consumed other Neanderthals under circumstances that cannot be fully recovered, potentially involving starvation, violence, ritual, or ordinary subsistence behavior toward the dead, and that Homo sapiens also practiced cannibalism across multiple periods
Their genetic history has destroyed the cleanest boundary between them and us. The first high-quality Neanderthal genomes showed that living people outside Africagenerally carry about1 to 2% Neanderthal ancestry. Later studies revealed a more complicated pattern of recurrent gene flow, with modern humans and Neanderthals meeting and having fertile children more than once, DNA moving in both directions.
Neanderthals were a sister lineage, neither direct ancestors nor entirely separate strangers, making even the word species awkward, with some researchers classifying them asHomo neanderthalensis and others as asubspecies,Homo sapiens neanderthalensis
Neanderthal DNA was gradually removed from modern human populations, suggesting many inherited variants were harmful in a different genetic background, though others persisted affecting immunity, skin biology, metabolism, and disease risk. Their disappearance, popularized as smarterHomo sapiens outcompeting them, was likely far more complex, involving already small and fragmented populations, rapid climate change, shifting prey distributions, and possibly competition, violence, or disease. Neanderthals vanished as a distinct population around40,000 years ago, but their ancestry continued inside expandingHomo sapienspopulations, meaning replacement was partly absorption
Science’s greatest error, experts now argue, was turning variation into essence. The brute was too simple, and the noble Neanderthal is too simple.
What remains is a population close enough to recognize and distant enough to resist us. They were not almost human, but human in a broader evolutionary sense, while remaining genuinely unlike us. If we insist Neanderthals deserve respect only after proving they painted masterpieces, spoke modern language, and possessed every trait we admire in ourselves, we repeat the old hierarchy, simply allowing them onto the top step after passing our exam. The real discovery is more unsettling than either caricature.
There was never only one way to be human, and for most of our evolutionary history, multiple human lineages shared the planet. Homo sapiens did not enter an empty world waiting to become ours. We are simply the human population that remained
