Scientists have established that laughter is far older than humanity itself, with the earliest laughs on Earth emerging between 10 and 16 million years ago in a common ancestor shared by humans and all living great apes. In 2009, primatologist Marina Davila Ross tickled the palms, feet, and necks of 22 infant and juvenile orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos—along with three human babies—and recorded every sound produced. Her team built an acoustic family tree from those recordings, which aligned almost perfectly with known ape evolutionary relationships. The findings, published in Current Biology, place the origin of laughter deep inside the last common ancestor of humans and great apes, long before Homo erectus stood upright, long before Neanderthals existed, and long before anyone controlled fire.

Laughter did not begin as a response to jokes or comedy. It evolved from wrestling. Without a signal to distinguish play from violence, rough-and-tumble games risked escalating into actual fights.

Early hominins wrestling, chasing, or mock-fighting released this signal to tell everyone nearby that no bite or blow was real. According to laughter researcher Robert Provine, modern humans are roughly 30 times more likely to laugh when another person is nearby than when alone.
No animal can tickle itself into laughing; the mechanism only activates in the presence of someone else. Two ancient humans laughing together released the same flood of endorphins, dropped the same stress hormones, and walked away trusting each other slightly more than before. Repeated daily across a tribe of 20 or 30 people, laughter functioned as social glue, holding the group’s structure together. Ancient humans did not laugh at punchlines.

The relief theory, first sketched in philosophical writing from the early 1700s and later developed by Freud, says laughter discharges built-up nervous tension all at once. Modern studies confirm both ideas physically: laughing after a stressful moment measurably lowers cortisol in the bloodstream and triggers a rush of endorphins—the same chemical response an ancestor would feel upon realizing a feared predator was never there. Human laughter sounds nothing like a chimpanzee’s because of a shift in posture.
Chimpanzees laugh by panting, alternating sound with breath on both inhale and exhale, producing a rough scraping noise. Humans laugh only on the exhale in short, parsed bursts, giving the clean”ha ha ha”pattern. Researchers trace this difference to walking upright. Four-legged animals breathe in rhythm with their stride because the rib cage absorbs the shock of footfalls.
Once ancestors stood up, the thorax was freed from that job,and breathing uncoupled from movement entirely. That change gave humans the breath control to speak in full sentences and to laugh in the rhythm recognized today. Could Neanderthals laugh like modern humans? According to Philip Liebermanat Brown University, the anatomy says yes.
Neanderthals had a larynx anda horseshoe-shaped hyoid bone built almost exactly like ours—the same vocal machinery required for a voiced human laugh. Acoustic research published in 2026 in Communications Biology found that the evenly timed rhythmic structure of laughter was likely already present in the shared ancestor of every branch of the hominid family, Neanderthals included. Social evidence supports this too. At Shanidar Cave in modern Iraq, archaeologists found remains of a Neanderthal man missing most of one arm, partially blind,and deaf in at least one ear, who survived into his 40s.
He could not have hunted, defended himself, or kept up with the group alone. Someone fed him and walked beside him, which requires deep social bonds. Lieberman concludes their brains could already manage the complex motor control human speech requires, so they definitely could have laughed.
