Humans spent 200,000 years sleeping in loud, crowded, vigilant groups, but modern life traps them in quiet, isolated rooms. Insomnia rates, sleep apnea, and nighttime anxiety are rising because biology still expects the conditions of 50,000 BC. To the primitive brain, a quiet room with a closed door does not mean privacy. It means separation from the tribe.

It means no one will hear a scream, and no one will be there to revive the fire. Modern spending on mattresses, pillows, and sleep apps cannot override this programming. Ancient humans did not have sleep disorders or a sleep industry. They had the messy, crowded reality of the group, which provided the biological certainty of not being alone.

Despite having warmth, safety, and total privacy, this generation is the most sleep-deprived in history. The night reveals the lie of individualism. Vulnerability was the price of being alive, and the only way to afford it was to pool resources. The lone wolf is a fiction of the modern age.
