Anthropological research into the last remaining hunter-gatherer groups on Earth suggests that prehistoric humans spent only 15 to 20 hours per week on food procurement, a fraction of the time modern people devote to work. The number emerged from studies of groups like the Hadza of Tanzania, the Kung San of the Kalahari, and the Ju/’hoansi of Namibia, who continue to live in a manner close to the original human pattern. In 1968, anthropologist Richard Lee published years of time-tracking data on the Kung people, finding roughly 12 to 19 hours per week spent on acquiring food. Two years earlier, at the 1966 Man the Hunter conference at the University of Chicago, anthropologist Marshall Sahlins famously described these societies as the original affluent society.

His logic was simple: they were wealthy not because they had much, but because they wanted little and their needs were almost always met. Studies in the decades since have backed up those findings, while also challenging assumptions about how these groups live. A 2015 study led by Gandhi Yetish, published in Current Biology, fitted members of the Hadza, San, and Tsimane with wristband tracking devices. It found that they do not sleep at sunset.
Instead, they stay awake for two and a half to four hours after dark, talking and sitting by fire, falling asleep as temperatures drop. They wake before sunrise, responding to cold rather than light. Surprisingly, these groups sleep between 5. 7 and 7.
1 hours a night, less than what many modern experts recommend, and almost never take daytime naps. Chronic insomnia affects only 1. 5 to 2. 5 percent of these populations, compared with 10 to 30 percent in industrialized nations.
Researchers noted that the San language has no word for insomnia, and members struggled to understand the concept of lying awake night after night. Days begin without schedules or leaders. Men go out to hunt, often walking 12 to 14 kilometers a day over rough terrain. Women, usually in groups of three to eight, gather food, carrying children under two while digging tubers, collecting berries, and hauling water.
Grandmothers are often the most productive gatherers, bringing back more food per day than mothers in their twenties, a pattern anthropologists call the grandmother hypothesis. Children learn through proximity and participation rather than formal instruction. A three-year-old may walk alongside her mother with a small stick, poking at dirt. By age six, she can identify edible plants, and by ten, she contributes meaningfully to the camp’s food supply.
One of the most striking findings came from Herman Pontzer’s energy expenditure research, published in PLoS One in 2012. Using the doubly labeled water method, his team found that Hadza men burn roughly 2,600 calories per day and women around 1,900. After controlling for body size, these numbers are statistically indistinguishable from sedentary office workers in wealthy countries, despite the Hadza walking many more kilometers daily. Pontzer describes this as the constrained energy expenditure model.
The body keeps a fixed energy budget, and when physical activity rises, it cuts spending elsewhere, on inflammation, immune response, or reproduction. More exercise does not necessarily mean more calories burned. It means redistribution. The reality of hunting is also far from movie depictions.
There is no dramatic chase. Most of the work is patient, quiet walking through heat, following tracks that often lead nowhere. Most hunts come back empty-handed. The Hadza hunt with bows tipped in poison from the desert rose, and a single large kill may happen only once every several days.
Midday brings a total stop. The groups rest in shade, avoiding the risk of dehydration and heatstroke. There is no clock and no supervisor. This body-driven rhythm, hard effort in the cool morning, rest at peak heat, lighter activity later, contrasts sharply with the fixed-shift structure of industrial work.
All food brought back is placed into a central pile and shared by the camp. The Hadza word za, roughly meaning to give or share, is among the first words children learn. Sharing is not charity but the operating system of the group, a system that prevents hoarding and keeps hierarchy minimal. Because food cannot be accumulated and stored, power cannot be accumulated either.
The daily schedule has rhythms that extend into the night. In 2014, anthropologist Polly Wiessner published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences based on more than 40 years of recorded conversations among the Ju/’hoansi San. She found that during the day, 80 percent of conversations are practical and economic in nature, about who found what, who owes whom, and conflict management. After dark, the pattern flips, and more than 80 percent of talk is stories about hunts, relatives, love, and what happens after death.
Wiessner argued that firelight storytelling was not merely entertainment but crucial social infrastructure. In the absence of written language or communication technology, stories carried information about trust, resources, and reliable exchange partners across hundreds of kilometers. Firelight also softened the visual signals of dominance and status, creating a psychological space where disagreements could be processed through stories rather than escalating into conflict. Wiessner concluded that firelight may have been the original driver of human storytelling and complex social reasoning.
The use of fire itself is ancient. The earliest confirmed controlled fire comes from Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa, roughly one million years ago. Fire extended the day, pushing back a boundary that had belonged to nocturnal predators and creating hours that no other species was using. Those hours became the time for culture, relationship, and the transmission of knowledge.
The weekly total of actual foraging effort sits between 15 and 20 hours. When cooking, tool repair, child care, and moving camp are added, researchers estimate total labor at roughly 30 to 40 hours per week. Even that higher number remains below the workload of many modern full-time workers and offers flexibility that industrial schedules do not. The academic debate over these numbers goes back to the 1966 Chicago conference.
Lee’s data on the Kung challenged a deep Victorian assumption that primitive life was brutal and that survival consumed all waking hours. Anthropologist James Woodburn, studying the Hadza independently, found men spending less than two hours a day on food procurement across the full year and said they were more interested in gambling than in the opportunities hunting presented. The question of what ended this way of life points to agriculture. In 1987, Jared Diamond called the agricultural revolution the worst mistake in the history of the human race.
Evidence from Dickson Mounds in Illinois, a site showing a transition to maize farming around 1150 AD, supports the claim. When the population shifted to farming, average male height dropped, life expectancy at birth fell from 26 years to 19, iron deficiency anemia increased fourfold, and enamel defects from nutritional stress rose by nearly 50 percent. Agriculture made individual lives harder, but it allowed more people to survive per square kilometer. It also created the conditions for hierarchy.
Once food could be stored, whoever controlled the storage held power over those who needed to eat. For the first time, some people could live off the labor of others without producing food themselves. More recent evidence confirms the pattern. A 2019 study by Mark Dyble and colleagues, published in Nature Human Behavior, examined the Agta of the Philippines, a group in transition between foraging and farming.
Fully foraging communities averaged about 20 hours a week of out-of-camp labor. Communities that had shifted significantly into farming averaged 30 hours. Women in farming communities had roughly half the leisure time of women in foraging communities. Critics of the original 15-to-20-hour figure point out that it counts only hunting and gathering, not cooking, water collection, toolmaking, nursing, or moving camp.
When those tasks are included, the total rises to 35 to 45 hours. Even so, that remains below the 60 to 70 hour weeks standard for factory workers during the Industrial Revolution, who worked 12 to 16 hours a day, six days a week. Since the mid-20th century, productivity has risen sharply. A modern worker now produces in about 11 hours what took 40 hours of labor in 1950.
Yet the extra time has not appeared as leisure. It went into higher consumption and economic structures that converted time savings into more goods. The core question raised by Sahlins was never simply how many hours hunter-gatherers worked. It was what affluence means.
Is it having more or needing less? Hunter-gatherers capped their needs at a level the land could reliably meet, shared everything so no individual was fully exposed to a bad day, and spent the hours not needed for survival on talking, storytelling, and sitting together around a fire. These groups did not live in paradise. Children died, people got hurt, and disease moved through camps with nothing to stop it.
Modern vaccines, antibiotics, and clean water are real achievements. But researchers note that something from the original arrangement, a balance between effort and rest and between work and social time, has not been recovered. Productivity kept rising, hours did not fall, and many people in modern societies now live with chronic sleep disorders that their ancestors did not even have a word for.
