This has led researchers to ask a deeply unsettling question: can non-human animals display patterns of behavior that meaningfully resemble human psychopathy? So, can animals be psychopaths? Whether these animals experience anything resembling the internal emotional emptiness that defines the human clinical experience remains unknowable, since we cannot ask a dolphin how it feels.
But the observable pattern of social disruption, exploitation, and uncorrected antisocial conduct appears to be something evolution built more than once, independently, across multiple unrelated branches of the social animal kingdom. This suggests that whatever produces psychopathy in humans might be tapping into something far older and more fundamental about social brain wiring. The shadow side of social behavior might not be a uniquely human flaw in an otherwise cooperative natural world.
