What Ancient Humans Did About Unwanted Pregnancy

A 4,000-year-old Egyptian medical papyrus contains what scholars consider the oldest written instructions for preventing pregnancy. The Kahun Gynecological Papyrus, dating to roughly 1825 BCE, was discovered in 1889 by British Egyptologist Flinders Petrie at El-Lahun. When translated, it read more like a clinical manual than ancient mysticism, containing 34 sections on women’s health, fertility, and contraception. One recipe called for a pessary made from crocodile dung mixed with fermented dough.

Modern analysis shows crocodile dung is naturally alkaline, which changes the vaginal pH and creates a hostile environment for sperm while also acting as a physical barrier. The Egyptians lacked the vocabulary for chemistry, but generations of trial and error led them to methods that genuinely worked. Another recipe from the Ebers Papyrus, dating to around 1550 BCE, used a mixture of acacia gum, honey, and dates soaked into lint or shredded fiber. Modern pharmacologists have found that fermented acacia gum produces lactic acid, a compound that kills sperm on contact and is still used in commercial spermicides today.

The Egyptians developed this roughly 3,500 years before the discovery of cells. In the 2nd century CE, the physician Soranus of Ephesus wrote what is considered the most important gynecological text of the ancient world. He drew a clear distinction between contraception and abortion, arguing that preventing conception was far preferable to destroying an embryo. His recommendations included smearing the cervix with old olive oil, honey, or cedar resin, and inserting a lock of fine wool as a barrier, methods operating on the same principles as a modern cervical cap.

The most extraordinary ancient contraceptive was a plant called silphium, which grew in the ancient city of Cyrene on the coast of modern Libya. Greeks and Romans considered it the most valuable plant on Earth, using it as seasoning, perfume, and medicine. Its most famous use was oral contraception, and its effectiveness was documented so consistently that Cyrene built its economy around it. The city minted coins depicting the plant and its seed pod, which has a shape resembling a heart.

Some historians have proposed that the modern heart symbol may trace its origin to this seed pod, though the theory is debated. Silphium became the first recorded human-caused extinction. Demand was so high that the plant, which resisted cultivation and grew only in a narrow strip of coastal land, was harvested faster than it could regenerate. By the 1st century CE, Pliny the Elder recorded that only a single stalk had been found in living memory, sent to Emperor Nero as a curiosity.

After that, it vanished from the historical record. In 2021, researcher Mohammad Miski at Istanbul University proposed that a related species called Ferula drudeana, found on a mountainside in Turkey, might be a surviving relative. Its appearance matches the coins and its chemistry shows anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, but whether it is truly the lost plant remains an open question. When prevention failed, ancient women turned to herbal abortifacients.

Pennyroyal, a plant in the mint family, was brewed into tea or distilled into concentrated oil to stimulate uterine contractions. The margin between the dose that ended a pregnancy and the dose that destroyed the liver was razor thin. Tansy, rue, black hellebore, and savin were used similarly, with knowledge held by midwives and healers and passed down privately. Other documented approaches included wild carrot seeds, recorded by Hippocrates around 400 BCE as a method for preventing implantation.

Modern studies show these seeds contain compounds that interfere with progesterone, the hormone a fertilized egg needs to attach to the uterine wall. Soranus also documented physical methods such as vigorous jumping, heavy lifting, and long walks to dislodge an early pregnancy, while warning against the use of instruments due to the risk of puncturing the uterus. When all methods failed and a child was born, ancient Roman practice allowed the father to decide its fate. A newborn was placed on the ground at the father’s feet.

If he picked it up, the child was accepted. If not, it was taken out and left to die. This practice, called exposure, was standard and legal under the father’s authority known as patria potestas. Girls and disabled infants were exposed more often than others, and philosophers including Plato and Aristotle endorsed the practice.

A letter found in the ruins of Oxyrhynchus in Egypt, dating to 1 BCE, illustrates the routine nature of this decision. A man named Hilarion, working in Alexandria, wrote to his pregnant wife Alice with affection, promising money as soon as he was paid. Then in the same sentence he wrote, “If it is a male, let it live. If it is a female, expose it.

” Some exposed infants were adopted or collected by slavers, while many died. In medieval Europe, the problem became so severe that foundling hospitals were built and the Catholic Church installed rotating wooden doors called foundling wheels in convent walls, where mothers could anonymously leave infants and ring a bell. The system operated in parts of Europe until the late 1800s. For most of human history, preventing unwanted pregnancy was a survival problem, not a political debate.

Ancient peoples used crocodile dung, drank mint tea that could stop their hearts, harvested a plant to extinction, and left infants exposed because the alternatives were starvation or death. The modern pharmacy offers what earlier generations could not obtain: a choice that does not kill.
