Other researchers have pushed back directly on the original oxytocin gaze study, raising legitimate methodological concerns, including potential confounding differences between male and female hormone responses across the test subjects, questions about whether the dogs studied had been raised under sufficiently comparable conditions to the wolves used for comparison,and broader questions about whether this specific effect is genuinely unique to the human-dog relationship, or might actually generalize more broadly to other kinds of caregiver bonding relationships, including potentially between dogs and their own canine mothers. But for domestic dogs, specifically the one species we’ve spent roughly 15,000 years deliberately and accidentally reshaping into something resembling permanent, lifelong puppies through generations upon generations of selective breeding, something genuinely does appear to be happening biologically that looks remarkably like a real bonding response aimed directly and specifically at us, riding squarely on the exact same oxytocin pathway that connects human parents to their own human infants during early attachment. Whether you personally want to call that finding humans cute in the full, rich aesthetic sense, or whether you’d rather describe it more precisely and cautiously as an evolved interspecies attachment mechanism that simply happens to produce strikingly similar warm, fuzzy behavioral and hormonal outputs is honestly partly just a matter of definition and semantics at this point.
But the accumulating data increasingly suggests dogs aren’t simply tolerating our presence or purely food motivated in their affection toward us or merely trained through repetition into something that only superficially resembles genuine attachment.
