Cattle, sheep, and goats followed around 10,000 years ago, and pigs about 9,000 years ago.
Those domestication events occurred within the context of early human cultural complexity, involved deliberate and sustained human effort to modify the behavior and biology of the species involved, and in some cases even predated fully established agriculture. Cats are a different case entirely. The earliest confirmed evidence of cats in close association with humans comes from the island of Cyprus, where a cat was buried alongside a human roughly 9,500 years ago. This is remarkable because Cyprus had no native wild cat population.
The animal must have been deliberately transported to the island by people, meaning humans valued cats enough to bring them aboard boats nearly nine millennia ago. However, cat domestication in the strict sense is generally dated to the Fertile Crescent, the first agricultural settlements of about 10,000 years ago, and the specific mechanism was not intentional at all. Agriculture created grain storage. Grain storage attracted rodents.
Rodents attracted wild cats. That is the story in its essence. The agricultural revolution, which transformed human life in countless ways, also unintentionally created the environmental conditions that kept wild cats in constant proximity to human settlements. Rodents infesting grain stores became a reliable, concentrated food source.
Wild cats that discovered this resource found something immensely valuable: abundant, predictable prey that required no exhausting chase across open terrain. Those wild cats least fearful of human proximity exploited this resource far better than those that fled at the first sign of people. Over generations, the less fearful cats survived and reproduced more successfully in settlement environments. This is self-domestication in its purest form.

Temples dedicated to Bastet housed large numbers of cats cared for by temple priests.
Cats that died naturally in homes were mummified and buried in cat-specific cemeteries, some containing hundreds of thousands of mummies. Killing a cat in ancient Egypt, even accidentally, was punishable by death. This represents a transformation in human-cat relations far beyond the pest control that started it all. The cat became sacred, a symbol of protection, fertility, and feminine power.
What happened in Egypt to drive this shift? As Egyptian civilization grew in size and productivity, its grain-based food supply became increasingly dependent on the agricultural output of the Nile Valley. A civilization whose food supply depended on that system had compelling reasons to value animals that protected it from rodents. A cat that eliminates mice from a small Neolithic settlement’s grain store is useful.
A cat that protects the grain stores feeding millions across an empire is indispensable. The sacred status of cats in Egypt may have been, in part, a practical acknowledgment of this importance expressed in cultural language. Protecting something important by sanctifying it is a strategy that appears across human cultures in various forms. It creates social enforcement mechanisms through religious taboos and obligations.
If killing a cat is a capital crime because cats are sacred to Bastet, fewer cats get killed. A rarely discussed chapter in cat history is the Middle Ages, when the cat shifted from a tolerated pest controller to an actively persecuted animal. By the time of the Roman Empire, cats had spread throughout the Mediterranean basin. Roman soldiers took cats on military campaigns, both for pest control in army camps and as companionship.
Vikings carried cats aboard their ships; ship holds storing food attracted rodents, making them ideal environments for cats. Viking cats reached Iceland and Greenland, possibly even North American shores, before official European exploration began. The rodent problem aboard ships was so severe that cats were considered essential maritime equipment. A ship without a cat was a ship at risk.
The impact of domestic cats on wildlife is now one of the most significant and controversial conservation issues in modern biology. Estimates suggest that domestic and feral cats kill between one and four billion birds and between six and twenty-two billion small mammals annually in the United States alone. These numbers are large enough to make cats one of the leading human-associated causes of wildlife mortality globally, far exceeding mortality from window collisions, car accidents, and pesticides combined. This is the result of introducing a highly effective predator into ecosystems that evolved without it.

The unique personality traits of cats, independent enough not to require constant care, present enough to provide companionship, expressive enough to be interesting, and small enough to manage in tight living spaces, make them particularly suited to the social conditions of modern urban life. Cats fit into apartments in ways that dogs require special accommodation for. Cats can be left alone for a workday in ways that genuinely distress dogs.
Cat care requirements align with the busy schedules of modern city workers in ways that many other pets do not. The story of cat domestication is essentially the story of an exceptionally lucky opportunist. Lucky that the environment created by the agricultural revolution, grain stores, rodents, and human settlements, was precisely the environment a solitary predator that tolerated moderate human proximity could exploit to the fullest. Lucky that the cultural frameworks that developed in Egypt granted cats a sacred status that protected and valued them during a critical period.
Lucky that the human trade networks that spread across the world carried the grain and ships cats had adapted to perfectly. And lucky in the modern sense, because the unique blend of independence and companionship that characterizes the cat’s social style is exactly what contemporary urban lifestyles reward. Cats did not choose humans. They chose grain stores, and humans came with those stores.
Over more than ten thousand years, grain stores have mostly disappeared as a practical necessity. But by then, the relationship had gained its own momentum through companionship, cultural significance, and simple familiarity with a species that lived alongside humans long enough to become woven into the fabric of human domestic life. The cat sitting on your lap right now is operating on a behavioral program developed for hunting mice in Egyptian grain stores. The warm spot it has chosen on your body is the same spot it would have chosen on an ancient stone floor near a fire.
The social behavior it displays toward you, slow blinks, head bumps, choosing to sleep near you, is modified wildcat social behavior. It is the tolerated approach of an animal that has decided you are acceptable in its territory. For the cat, this is a perfectly reasonable arrangement. You keep it warm and fed.
It tolerates your presence. The Egyptians made this sacred. Looking at your cat, it is hard to argue with them.
