For more than two decades, Joel Osteen stood before tens of thousands of followers with a message built on hope and positivity, building Lakewood Church into the largest congregation in the United States. But a series of controversies—from a shooting inside the church to questions about financial transparency—has increasingly clouded the legacy of the man who rose to global fame by keeping his sermons relentlessly upbeat. Born in Houston on March 5, 1963, Joel Scott Osteen was the fourth of five children born to John Osteen and Dolores “Dodie” Pilgrim Osteen. His father, a former Southern Baptist minister, embraced charismatic Christianity after a personal family crisis and founded Lakewood Church in 1959 in a converted feed store with roughly 90 attendees.
Over the following decades, the congregation grew steadily and became one of the fastest-expanding churches in the nation. Joel initially steered away from ministry. After briefly studying communications at Oral Roberts University, he returned to Houston and spent 17 years working behind the scenes building Lakewood’s television ministry. He repeatedly turned down invitations to preach, until January 1999, when he finally agreed to deliver a sermon at age 35.
Just six days later, his father died suddenly of a heart attack. By October of that year, Joel Osteen was installed as senior pastor. Under his leadership, the church expanded dramatically. In 2005, Lakewood moved into a former NBA arena, converting it into a 16,800-seat facility, and weekly attendance rose into the tens of thousands, making it the largest church in America.
His 2004 book, “Your Best Life Now,” became a global bestseller, followed by several other top-selling titles that turned Osteen into an international brand. With that visibility came scrutiny. In 2005, Osteen announced he would stop taking a salary from the church and rely on income from book sales and speaking engagements. Nonetheless, reports about his multi-million-dollar home in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood drew criticism, and nonprofit watchdogs gave Lakewood low scores for financial transparency, noting that as a church it was not required to disclose detailed financial information.
Critics argued too little income went to charity, while supporters pointed to the church’s large operational scale and global outreach. That same year, Victoria Osteen, Joel’s wife, was accused of assaulting a flight attendant during a commercial flight. The incident escalated into a legal battle; she was fined and later cleared in court, but the story fueled media attention around the family. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston.
Lakewood initially stated it was inaccessible due to flooding, but images shared online appeared to show the facility largely unaffected. An immediate backlash accused the church of failing to act quickly in a time of crisis. Osteen responded by saying the church had not closed its doors and would open when necessary; eventually, Lakewood did provide shelter to displaced residents. For many, however, the initial damage to his reputation was already done.
One of the strangest chapters of the church’s history involved an unrecovered theft. In 2014, Lakewood reported that approximately $600,000 in donations had been stolen, but no arrests were made and the case went cold. In 2021, a plumber working inside the church discovered hundreds of envelopes filled with cash and checks hidden inside a wall. Authorities later linked the find to the original theft, but to this day no one has been charged.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lakewood received $4. 4 million in government relief funds through the Paycheck Protection Program. Public reaction was swift and sharply critical, with many questioning why one of the country’s most visible churches would accept taxpayer-funded assistance. The backlash grew intense enough that Lakewood eventually returned the full amount.
In February 2024, tragedy struck in a way no one could ignore. A woman entered Lakewood Church armed with a rifle and opened fire between services. Off-duty officers working security responded and killed the attacker. The situation became even more devastating when it was revealed that her young son had been critically injured during the incident, suffering severe, life-altering injuries.
Osteen, visibly shaken, addressed the media and expressed heartbreak and disbelief. Throughout the rise, the controversies, and the tragedies, Osteen has remained consistent in how he presents himself: calm, optimistic, and focused on hope. But the scrutiny around him has deepened, and the conversations have grown sharper.
