More than 50 years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, the spacecraft that carried them there remains exposed to one of the most hostile environments in existence. The descent stage of the Apollo 11 lunar module, known as the Eagle, has sat abandoned at Tranquility Base since July 1969, enduring extreme heat, freezing cold, and constant radiation. Many people wonder why telescopes on Earth cannot simply show us the lander. The obstacle is not just the Moon’s distance of roughly 384,400 kilometers.

Every telescope has a limit to how small an object it can clearly resolve, and the Eagle is simply too small at that range. Even the Hubble Space Telescope can only separate details on the Moon down to about 90 or 100 meters wide, far larger than the landing site. The lander would appear as nothing more than a tiny blur. The clearest images came instead from a spacecraft that went to the Moon itself.
In 2009, NASA launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to map the lunar surface. When the orbiter lowered its orbit to about 20 kilometers above the ground, its camera could detect details roughly 25 centimeters across. Those images revealed the Eagle’s descent stage still standing where the astronauts left it, along with visible trails in the soil marking their movements. Armstrong’s walk toward Little West Crater, about 60 meters from the lander, left a track that remains clearly visible after half a century.
Because the Moon has no wind, no rain, and no plant life, footprints and disturbed soil last far longer than they would on Earth. That same lack of atmosphere, however, means the site is not a perfectly preserved museum. The American flag planted near the lunar module was likely knocked over by the engine blast when Armstrong and Aldrin lifted off to rejoin Michael Collins in orbit. Later Apollo missions placed their flags farther from the spacecraft, and some of those remain standing.
The Apollo 11 flag, however, was made of nylon and has spent decades exposed directly to harsh ultraviolet radiation with no protective atmosphere. Its colors have almost certainly faded severely, and the fabric may have become brittle and broken down over time. The Moon itself is slowly changing the landing site. Tiny meteoroid impacts constantly stir and mix the upper layer of soil, gradually blurring the famous footprints.
The Moon is also slowly shrinking as it cools, producing shallow moonquakes that can shift the surface. These forces are small compared with those on Earth, but over thousands or millions of years they will continue to alter what remains at Tranquility Base. The Apollo landings also gave rise to a lasting public debate about whether they really happened. Doubters pointed to the limited technology of the 1960s, the strange movements of astronauts on video, and details in photographs that seemed difficult to explain.
The rise of the internet made old images and footage widely available, allowing these questions to reach a much larger audience than ever before. One of the earliest prominent critics was Bill Kaysing, a former employee of Rocketdyne, a company connected to the Apollo rocket program. He questioned whether NASA was willing to risk astronauts on the powerful Saturn 5 rocket and suggested the public may have been shown something other than the real mission. His claims became a foundation for later moon hoax theories.
Engineers and historians have offered counterarguments for each major point of doubt. The Apollo computer, though weak by modern standards, was built for a specific set of tasks, and much of the complex calculation was handled by teams at Mission Control on Earth. The odd movement seen in footage was the result of the Moon’s weaker gravity and the heavy, stiff space suits the astronauts wore. The photographs also drew intense scrutiny.
Critics noted shadows appearing to point in different directions, clear details visible in shaded areas, and a complete absence of stars in the sky. They saw these as signs of a studio production. Technical experts responded that the astronauts used modified Hasselblad cameras with larger controls and simplified focusing, specifically designed for use with thick gloves, and that the astronauts trained extensively with them before the mission. Shadows and lighting behave differently on an airless surface with no atmospheric scattering.
Radio signals provided another layer of evidence. Amateur radio operators and observers at the Jodrell Bank observatory in England were able to receive communications from the astronauts during the mission, independent of NASA’s official broadcasts. This made the idea of a purely staged event inside a building difficult to reconcile. Armstrong’s own preparation for the mission was long and dangerous.
Years before the launch, he trained in harsh environments, studied lunar geology, and practiced landing maneuvers. During one test of a lunar landing training vehicle, the machine became difficult to control and crashed. Armstrong ejected safely, and the incident served as a reminder of the risks involved. On July 16, 1969, Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins launched from Earth.
After several days of travel, Armstrong and Aldrin entered the lunar module and began their descent on July 20. Armstrong noticed that the intended landing area was filled with rocks and a crater, so he took manual control and guided the spacecraft to a safer spot. After landing, he radioed mission control with the message that the Eagle had landed. Armstrong then climbed down the ladder and became the first human to set foot on another world.
During the moonwalk, the astronauts took photographs, collected about 50 pounds of rock and soil, planted the flag, and set up scientific instruments, including equipment designed to measure lunar activity and the precise distance between the Earth and the Moon. Armstrong later noted an unusual smell from the lunar dust that had been brought into the module, comparing it to wet fireplace ashes. After completing their work, Armstrong and Aldrin lifted off from the Moon, rejoined Collins in orbit, and returned to Earth on July 24, landing in the Pacific Ocean. The crew was then placed in quarantine out of concern that the Moon might contain unknown contaminants.
Many years later, a private detail of Armstrong’s life came to light. In 2015, the Smithsonian revealed that Armstrong had quietly kept a small cloth bag containing items from the Apollo 11 mission. Inside were pieces of equipment, including a waste tether, small lights and brackets, an emergency wrench, an optical sight, and the camera that recorded his first steps on the lunar surface. Armstrong had never publicly announced that he had kept these objects.
He reportedly viewed them more as leftover equipment than as treasures, and even his official biographer was unaware of their existence. After Armstrong’s death, his wife Carol found the collection and eventually brought it to the Smithsonian’s attention. The items carried direct connections to the first moon landing and became significant historical artifacts.
They also offered a rare glimpse into Armstrong’s character, showing a man who had taken part in one of history’s greatest achievements while treating its physical reminders with remarkable restraint.
