The Book Of Enoch Describes What Mars Actually Is — And What Once Lived On It

The Book of Enoch was removed from most Western Christian traditions centuries ago, but its ancient descriptions of a world stripped of protection and left desolate are now being compared to what scientists have discovered about Mars. The comparison has revived questions about whether the text preserved a memory of something real, or whether modern readers are simply finding connections that were never meant to be there. For most people, the Book of Enoch is known only as a mysterious and controversial ancient text. It describes the prophet Enoch being taken on journeys through the heavens, where he is shown the movement of the sun, the moon, and the stars.

He describes a carefully ordered universe in which every part of the sky follows an assigned path and every heavenly being has a responsibility to remain where it belongs. The book also tells the story of beings called the Watchers. According to the text, roughly 200 of them gathered at Mount Hermon under a leader named Shemihazah and made an agreement to cross a boundary they were never supposed to cross. They came down to earth, took human women as wives, and began passing forbidden knowledge to humanity.

One of their leaders, Azazel, was blamed for teaching humans how to work with metals and make weapons, while others were associated with astrology and magic. The children born from these unions were described as giants, powerful and violent beings whose hunger could not be satisfied. As their numbers grew, so did the destruction around them. The world became increasingly corrupt, and according to Enoch, heaven finally responded.

The angels Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel were sent to deal with the Watchers. The giants were marked for destruction, and the Watchers were condemned, bound, and sent away to a desolate place, separated from the order they had once been part of. For centuries, this was understood simply as a story about divine judgment. But when placed beside what scientists now know about Mars, some of the imagery has taken on a new significance.

Billions of years ago, Mars appears to have had a much thicker atmosphere, rivers, lakes, and conditions that may have been able to support life. Scientists believe the planet also once had a global magnetic field that acted as an invisible shield, protecting its atmosphere from the solar wind. As the planet cooled, the movement inside its core weakened, and that magnetic field disappeared. Without the shield, the solar wind gradually carried atmospheric particles away into space.

Over a very long period, Mars lost much of its atmosphere, making it harder for the planet to stay warm and for liquid water to remain on its surface. The world that may once have been much wetter became the cold, dry landscape we see today. The parallels with Enoch’s description of a place that loses its protection and is left exposed are striking. The reasons are completely different, but the picture left behind is surprisingly similar: protection disappears, the environment changes, and a once very different world is left cold and barren.

Mars also shows physical signs of violent reshaping. The planet is marked by a gigantic system of canyons called Valles Marineris, which stretches more than 4,000 kilometers and reaches several kilometers deep in places. Scientists believe it formed as the Martian crust stretched and cracked in response to massive changes in the nearby Tharsis region. Another feature that fueled speculation was photographed in 1976 by NASA’s Viking 1 spacecraft.

In the Cydonia region, a mesa, with sunlight falling across it in a particular way, looked remarkably like a giant human face. Nearby formations were interpreted by some as pyramids, and the images became part of a larger story about possible life on Mars. When NASA later photographed the same area with better cameras and clearer lighting, the famous face was shown to be a natural rock formation shaped by the planet’s own geology. Mars also has two small, irregularly shaped moons called Phobos and Deimos.

They were discovered in 1877 by American astronomer Asaph Hall. Their names come from Greek mythology, where Phobos and Deimos were the companions of Ares, the god of war, associated with fear and dread. Ares was later known to the Romans as Mars, a naming coincidence that has drawn attention from those looking for connections between ancient stories and the red planet. Phobos, the larger and closer of the two moons, orbits Mars in about seven and a half hours, much faster than the planet’s own rotation of roughly 24 and a half hours.

From the Martian surface, this makes Phobos appear to rise in the west and set in the east, the opposite of what we see with our own moon. Its surface is covered with deep craters and long grooves, and scientists are still divided over whether it is a captured asteroid or material thrown into orbit after a massive impact. Some writers have suggested Phobos could be artificial, but that claim has never been supported by solid evidence. The Book of Enoch itself has a remarkable survival story.

By the fourth century, church leaders such as Athanasius of Alexandria and Jerome were familiar with the book, but its stories made them uncomfortable. The idea of angels taking physical form and marrying human women did not fit with how they understood the spiritual world. They worried that accepting such a book could open the door to beliefs they considered dangerous. Over time, the text disappeared from the dominant Christian traditions of Western Europe, and many assumed it was lost for good.

In 1773, Scottish explorer James Bruce traveled through Ethiopia and found something European scholars had given up hope of finding. Ethiopian Christians had continued preserving the Book of Enoch in the ancient Ge’ez language, copying it from one generation to the next. Bruce returned to Europe with three complete copies. The question of how old the book really was remained unanswered until 1947, when ancient scrolls were discovered in caves near the Dead Sea at Qumran.

Among the thousands of fragments were pieces of the Book of Enoch, far older than the Ethiopian manuscripts already known. The discovery confirmed that the book’s unsettling stories had been circulating in the ancient world long before the surviving Ethiopian text was produced. Today, the Book of Enoch offers a rare look into the ideas, fears, and beliefs of people who lived thousands of years ago and tried to explain a universe they could not fully see. Its writers had no telescopes or spacecraft.

They could only watch the sun, the moon, and the stars and wonder what existed beyond the human world. Modern science has a very different way of looking at the sky, sending spacecraft to Mars to photograph its surface, study its atmosphere, and examine the marks left behind by ancient water and geological activity. Whether the Book of Enoch was secretly describing Mars cannot be proven. The comparisons may be purely coincidental.

But the ancient text’s descriptions of a place that lost its protection and was left in ruins continue to fascinate readers who look at the red planet and see the remains of a world that was once very different.
