Ellen DeGeneres spent nearly two decades telling audiences to “be kind,” a slogan that became the foundation of her brand. But a long series of controversies, personal accounts, and documented on-air moments have painted a far more complicated picture of the woman behind the smile. The daytime talk show host launched her program on September 8, 2003. It ran for almost 20 years on the strength of a simple image: Ellen was safe, warm, and generous.
She danced at the start of every episode, gave away cars and vacations, and comforted millions of viewers. Behind the cameras, however, former staff members described a workplace built on fear. One former producer said DeGeneres watched her executive producer berate crew members and laughed, calling him her “attack dog. ” The producer, who won Daytime Emmys working on the show, said the host was not the person audiences saw on television.
She was let go in 2004. Mariah Carey’s 2008 appearance on the show is one of the most thoroughly documented controversies. Rumors were circulating that Carey was pregnant, and she said on camera she did not want to discuss it. DeGeneres pressed her anyway, brought out champagne, and said, “Let’s toast to you not being pregnant.
” Carey took a small sip to be polite, and DeGeneres turned to the audience and announced that Carey was pregnant. Weeks later, Carey miscarried. In later interviews, she said she had a hard time dealing with everything that followed that moment. The clip resurfaced when allegations of a toxic workplace on the show became public, and Carey said she found the aftermath extremely difficult to process.
Comedian Kathy Griffin’s feud with DeGeneres dates back years. In her 2016 memoir, Griffin wrote about a daytime host with a “mean streak. ” She did not name DeGeneres directly, but the talk show host recognized herself and called to confront Griffin. The real breaking point came after Joan Rivers’s death in 2014.
Griffin asked DeGeneres to do a tribute to Rivers on the show. DeGeneres refused and said Rivers was mean, not funny. Griffin publicly called DeGeneres out for refusing to support women in comedy, especially older women. She said DeGeneres told her, “I don’t have to have anybody on my show I don’t like and I don’t want.
” DeGeneres banned Griffin from her show, and she never appeared again. Taylor Swift appeared on DeGeneres’s show 19 times over the years. Many of those visits followed the same pattern: DeGeneres repeatedly asked about Swift’s love life, her boyfriends, and which songs were written about which exes. During one appearance while promoting her album Red, DeGeneres gave Swift a bell and made her ring it whenever a photo of a past boyfriend appeared on screen.
Swift said this was the last shred of dignity she had left. She eventually broke down, nearly in tears, and asked DeGeneres to stop. The audience laughed. Years later, when Swift compiled her wedding guest list of about 1,000 people, DeGeneres was not on it.
Former production staff later confirmed what fans suspected: the friendship had only ever been a talk show act. Anne Heche dated DeGeneres publicly from 1997 to 2000. Heche said that after the relationship ended, she was blacklisted from major Hollywood studios for nearly 10 years. She believed it had nothing to do with her talent.
In her memoir, published after her death, Heche described DeGeneres as controlling and possessive, saying she isolated her from friends, dictated how she dressed, and left her financially broke. Heche said she left when she told DeGeneres she needed friends and DeGeneres said she did not want a girlfriend who needed that. Heche died in a car crash in August 2022 after her vehicle slammed into a home in Los Angeles and caught fire. At the time of her death, she was reportedly working on new material about her experiences.
No legal conclusions connected her death to DeGeneres, but the timing of her memoir’s release, after she was no longer able to speak for herself, drew attention. In January 2017, gospel singer Kim Burrell was scheduled to perform on DeGeneres’s show alongside Pharrell Williams. A video surfaced online of Burrell preaching aggressively against the LGBTQ+ community, calling gay people perverts and saying they would “die” from the “homosexual spirit. ” DeGeneres responded with a single tweet: “For those asking, Kim Burrell will not be appearing on my show.
”
The fallout was immediate and severe. Burrell’s radio show was pulled off the air, she was dropped from honors she had been scheduled to receive, and people connected to her other projects turned on her. Her career fell apart within days, sparked by one tweet from DeGeneres. Stephen “tWitch” Boss, DeGeneres’s long-time DJ and closest on-screen partner, took the opposite approach when the toxic workplace investigation went public in 2020.
He publicly defended the show, saying there was love on that set. He was then promoted to co-executive producer, giving him access to the show’s inner circle. The show ended in May 2022. In December of that same year, Boss died.
His widow has publicly said there was no falling out and that DeGeneres was a genuine support system for her family during that time. There are no accusations or legal findings linking his death to DeGeneres, but the timeline of his defense of her, followed months later by his death, has been widely noted. A separate clip has resurfaced in recent years showing DeGeneres discussing Diddy’s birthday parties on her show. At the time, it appeared to be harmless celebrity small talk.
In light of everything that has since come out publicly about those parties, the clip has taken on a different meaning.
