A new analysis of ancient human fossils is challenging one of the most widely accepted stories about prehistoric life: the idea that the injured were routinely abandoned. Among them, researchers identified a child they call Benjamina, who had craniosynostosis, a condition where skull plates fuse too early, deforming the head and likely causing developmental disabilities. One of the children, known as Sungir 3, had severely bowed and shortened thigh bones, a dramatic deformity that would have made walking difficult. The practice of surgery appears again in Neolithic Europe, where trepanation, the removal of a section of skull, was surprisingly common. At Ensisheim in Alsace, France, dating to around 5,100 BC, a man was buried with two large holes in his skull, both showing healed edges, indicating he survived the procedures, which were performed years apart. Across many European Neolithic assemblages, a large proportion of trepanned skulls show healing, meaning these early operations had notable survival rates, even by comparison to skull surgery in 18th-century European hospitals, which often proved fatal due to infection.

The popular image of prehistoric life as a ruthless struggle where the weak were abandoned is contradicted by the archaeological record.
Instead, the evidence suggests that the oldest, most consistent human behavior is not competition but care.
