The prevailing view for decades was a transaction model, which held that ancient humans formed pair bonds purely out of necessity and genetic self-interest. In that version of history, romantic love was seen as a recent cultural invention, perhaps from the Greeks or the troubadours of the Middle Ages. It activates the ventral tegmental area and the caudate nucleus, ancient regions of the brain that process reward and craving, the same neural pathways associated with thirst and hunger. In the Sunghir burials in Russia, dating back 30,000 years, archaeologists found a boy and a girl buried head-to-head, draped in over 10,000 mammoth ivory beads.
Since each bead took an estimated 45 minutes to carve, this grave represents roughly 7,500 hours of labor, nearly four years of dedicated work by a community. Such a staggering investment in two people who were already dead marks a fundamental refusal to let go and a desperate need to declare that these lives mattered. Dating in the deep past required cultural sophistication. About 75,000 years ago, humans at Blombos Cave in South Africa began crafting beads from Nassarius shells.
These objects served no practical purpose; they did not keep anyone warm or help kill prey. Evolutionary psychologist Dr. Geoffrey Miller argues these were fitness indicators, but not merely of physical health. The shift was from signaling strength to signaling uniqueness, expressing creativity, aesthetic, humor, and a symbolic world.
This marks the beginning of the mating mind, when humans began seeking partners who truly understood them, the root of what we value today as companionate love. The infamous heartbreak of love also has ancient precedent. At Hasanlu in Iran, dating back to 800 BC, archaeologists found two people who died of asphyxiation, likely hiding in a grain bin while their city was destroyed. The male has his arm around the female, and she reaches out to touch his face, her fingers resting near his lips in a final kiss.
In the last moments of life, facing the walls closing in, their instinct was not to fight or flee, but to provide comfort to the one person who made life worth living. Love appears to have evolved because human infants are born helpless and require years of intense, high-calorie care. A single mother in the Pleistocene could barely gather enough food while protecting a dependent infant. Nature’s solution was a chemical bond so powerful it feels like a physical addiction, ensuring that two people would stay together long enough to raise a child.
Love, in this sense, is not a luxury but the biological glue that kept the human species from extinction. As a result, we evolved physical traits to support this bond, including the whites of our eyes, which allow us to track another person’s gaze and build trust, and concealed ovulation, which likely encouraged pair bonding throughout the year. The skeletal record shows widespread interpersonal violence, broken noses, and healed rib fractures, evidence of intense face-to-face conflict over mates. Evolutionary psychologist David Buss argues that jealousy is the shadow of love, and the fact that humans fought so hard over partners is further proof that these bonds were extraordinarily strong. Perhaps the most compelling evidence of ancient love is found in extravagant grief. At Skhul Cave in Israel, researchers found a burial from 100,000 years ago in which a woman was laid to rest with a large boar’s jawbone placed in her arms.
Hunting a wild boar is dangerous work, yet someone took the risk to place a symbolic message in her grave. If love were only about reproduction, it should end at death. But it does not. This capacity for grief suggests that love is more than a survival tool; it is the very reason our ancestors wanted to survive at all.
The case for ancient love is conclusive: the brains of our ancestors were identical to ours, and they felt the same heat in the chest, the same dry mouth, and the same throb of the heart. We are the descendants of people who loved most intensely, and the ones who did not bond were the ones whose lineages died out in the freezing dark of the ice age.
