Ben Affleck has broken his silence about his marriage to Jennifer Garner in a way that goes far beyond the usual celebrity reflection. At 53, the Oscar-winning actor is publicly addressing the collapse of one of Hollywood’s most closely watched relationships, offering new insight into his regret, his struggles, and the bond that still connects him to his ex-wife. Affleck’s love life was a fixture of tabloid headlines long before Garner entered the picture. His early Hollywood romances included a highly publicized relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow from 1997 to 2000.

But it was his 2002 romance with Jennifer Lopez that created a media frenzy. The couple, dubbed “Bennifer,” became engaged by late 2002, with Affleck proposing using a 6. 1-carat pink diamond ring. The intense scrutiny took its toll, however, and by 2004 the engagement was called off.
Affleck and Garner first crossed paths in 2000 on the set of Pearl Harbor, but their connection grew during the filming of Daredevil in 2002. At the time, both were in other relationships. By 2004, they were both single, and the timing allowed their chemistry to develop into a real romance. In October 2004, they made their relationship official at a Boston Red Sox World Series game.
Affleck proposed on Garner’s 33rd birthday in April 2005 with a 4. 5-carat Harry Winston diamond, and they married in June of that year in a private ceremony on the beaches of Turks and Caicos. Garner’s Alias co-star Victor Garber officiated, and he was the only guest. The couple went on to have three children: Violet, born in 2005; Seraphina, born in 2009; and Samuel, born in 2012.
Their marriage was widely seen as a grounded fairy tale in Hollywood. Affleck’s career reached new heights during this period, culminating in a Best Picture Oscar for Argo in 2013. In his acceptance speech, he tearfully thanked Garner, calling their marriage “work, but the best kind of work. ”
By 2013, however, whispers of tension began to surface.
Reports emerged about Affleck’s struggles with alcohol and gambling, and sources said Garner was the one holding the family together. In June 2015, one day after their 10th wedding anniversary, the couple released a joint statement announcing their separation. They emphasized their commitment to co-parenting. Shortly after, reports surfaced alleging that Affleck had an affair with the family’s nanny, Christine Ouzounian.
Affleck’s representatives vigorously denied the claims, but the media firestorm was relentless. In 2016, Garner addressed the rumors in an interview with Vanity Fair, clarifying that they had been separated for months before the nanny scandal broke. She called their marriage real, saying, “It was a real marriage. It wasn’t for the cameras.
” She also described Affleck in deeply personal terms: “He’s the love of my life. He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. ”
Following the separation, Affleck’s battle with alcoholism became increasingly public.
In August 2018, paparazzi captured Garner arriving at his home and personally driving him to a rehabilitation center in Malibu, a moment widely seen as an act of profound loyalty. Their divorce was finalized in October 2018, but the image of Garner as the devoted anchor of the family never faded. Affleck later acknowledged his regrets. In a 2020 interview with The New York Times, he stated, “The biggest regret of my life is this divorce.
” The following year, he sparked backlash during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show when he said he had felt trapped in the marriage, suggesting that feeling was part of why he started drinking. He later clarified on Jimmy Kimmel Live that his words were taken out of context, insisting he would never say a bad word about his children’s mother. In 2021, Affleck dramatically reunited with Jennifer Lopez, reviving “Bennifer” for a second chapter. They married in 2022, first in a Las Vegas ceremony and later with a larger gathering in Georgia.
The reunion appeared to be a storybook ending. But by August 2024, Lopez filed for divorce, and the split was finalized in early 2025. Now, in a new interview with GQ, Affleck has said there was no scandal behind the end of his marriage to Lopez. He described the truth as “much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would find interesting.
” He also noted that his life is “actually pretty drama-free” and said he holds respect for his ex-wife while being done talking about her. Today, Affleck says his focus is on his children and his work. He returned to the big screen in April 2025 with The Accountant 2 and is developing a film with Matt Damon. Sources say he and Garner are not getting back together.
What they share now is something they have built carefully over time: mutual respect, a shared history, and a firm commitment to co-parenting.
