In 536, people across Europe, the Mediterranean, and parts of Asia looked up at a sun that seemed to have stopped working. It shone with the pale, useless brightness of the moon. Shadows faded, summer temperatures collapsed, and crops struggled beneath a sky that offered no warmth. There had been no warning.

No weather forecast. No explanation for why the world had suddenly gone cold and dim. The year 536 is often called the worst year in history to be alive. A massive volcanic eruption had thrown sulfur-bearing gases into the atmosphere, creating a veil of aerosols that blocked sunlight and triggered sharp cooling across much of the northern hemisphere.
Tree rings show that the eruption helped initiate the coldest decade in at least 2,000 years. In a world where most people lived close to the annual harvest, even a few degrees of cold could mean famine. The historian Procopius wrote that during this year the sun gave off light without brightness, almost like an eclipse. The Roman statesman Cassiodorus described a bluish sun, a moon that lacked its brilliance, and midday shadows that could barely be seen.
Reports from different regions describe unusual cold, drought, snow, and failed harvests. Irish annals record failures of bread. Chinese sources preserve accounts of severe weather and summer snow. Hunger rarely arrives as one dramatic moment.
It is subtraction. Bread becomes smaller. Families sell tools, livestock, and land. Children stop growing normally.
People travel in search of food, carrying disease with them. Those who survive become easier targets for infection. And there was no recovery. Around 540, another enormous volcanic eruption injected more material into the atmosphere, renewing the cold just as communities needed stability.
Then, in 541, a new epidemic was reported in Egypt. It moved through the Eastern Roman Empire and beyond. In 542, it struck Constantinople. The disease was caused by Yersinia pestis, the same bacterium associated with the later Black Death.
Ancient DNA has confirmed the bacterium in remains from the first plague pandemic. Procopius described fever, swellings in the groin or armpit, confusion, delirium, and death. He claimed the dead became so numerous that normal burial systems failed. His exact death tolls cannot be accepted literally, but the epidemic was real.
Constantinople, a crowded capital dependent on imported grain, offered disease an excellent transport network. How devastating was the Plague of Justinian? Older estimates sometimes claimed tens of millions died. More recent scholarship has challenged that picture.
Evidence varies dramatically by region. Pollen records, coin production, papyri, and burial patterns do not support one simple empire-wide collapse. The plague was dangerous, but its total demographic effect remains debated. The Eastern Roman Empire did not instantly collapse.
Justinian continued ruling until 565. Armies kept fighting. Taxes were collected. Buildings were built.
Merchants traded. Disaster does not always stop society. Sometimes society continues while large numbers of people suffer inside it. In Italy, conditions were especially brutal because climate and disease arrived during the Gothic War.
Justinian’s forces were attempting to reconquer the peninsula. Cities were besieged. Farms were abandoned or destroyed. Armies seized food.
Civilian populations faced displacement, hunger, violence, and epidemic disease. But 536 may not be history’s worst time. Move forward to Europe in 1348. The sun was visible.
That was almost the only advantage. The 14th century had already begun badly. From 1315 to 1317, relentless rain and cold helped create the Great Famine across much of Northern Europe. Then, in the late 1340s, plague arrived.
The Black Death probably emerged from a natural reservoir of Yersinia pestis in central Eurasia. It traveled along networks of movement and trade, reaching the Black Sea and then Mediterranean ports. In a European town, the first sign might be rumor. A distant port is sick.
Then a nearby city. Then someone on your street develops fever. Painful swellings appear in the groin, neck, or armpit. Some victims cough blood if infection reaches the lungs.
A healthy person can become desperately ill and die within days. There are no antibiotics. There is no knowledge of bacteria. People blame corrupted air, planetary alignments, divine anger, or personal sin.
Between 1347 and 1353, the Black Death may have killed around 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population, with enormous regional variation. In the worst-hit places, entire households disappeared. Clergy died while caring for the sick. Fields went unharvested because the workers were dead.
If half the people around you vanished within a few years, death would stop being an exceptional event. It would become the background. But Europe is not the world. Ask an indigenous person in the Americas to choose history’s worst time, and 1348 may have no special meaning.
The catastrophic period begins after 1492. European arrival connected populations that had been separated for thousands of years. Smallpox, measles, and influenza entered communities with no previous history of exposure. Epidemics interacted with warfare, enslavement, forced labor, displacement, and colonial violence.
For many communities, the disaster was more than mortality. It was the destruction of political systems, sacred sites, languages, family networks, and control over ancestral land. Survivors were not returning to the same world with fewer neighbors. The world itself was being taken.
Now move to central Europe during the Thirty Years’ War. Between 1618 and 1648, a conflict that began within the Holy Roman Empire expanded into a struggle involving major European powers. For civilians in heavily affected German regions, war did not mean one distant battle. It meant armies repeatedly moving across the landscape, demanding grain, meat, horses, shelter, and money.
If regular supply failed, civilians became the supply system. Troops requisitioned food, then stole it, then destroyed what they could not carry. Villages faced violence from enemy soldiers, friendly soldiers, deserters, and bandits. Farms were abandoned.
Trade broke down. Refugees crowded into towns. Most deaths in the war were probably not caused on battlefields. They came through the familiar partnership of hunger, infection, and social collapse.
Then there is 1816, the year without a summer. In April 1815, Mount Tambora in present-day Indonesia produced one of the largest eruptions in recorded history. The sulfur injected into the atmosphere altered climate far beyond Indonesia. In 1816, cold and erratic weather damaged crops across parts of Europe and North America.
Frost struck during months that should have supported growth. Food prices rose. Hunger and unrest followed. But 1816 also shows why the sixth-century event was so dangerous.
Nineteenth-century societies had wider trade networks, newspapers, and governments capable of organizing at least some relief. What about the 20th century? The trenches of 1916, the influenza pandemic of 1918, the famine in Ukraine, the Holocaust, the Bengal famine, Hiroshima. For the people inside them, no clever historical ranking can make volcanic haze worse than a death camp. Modern states gained the power to concentrate suffering deliberately.
They could register populations, control transport, organize mass imprisonment, and industrialize killing. Ancient disasters often reveal human helplessness before nature. Modern atrocities reveal what humans can accomplish after becoming extremely organized. There are two different competitions.
The worst general time to be randomly born across a large region, and the worst possible human situation. The second has no meaningful winner. There are too many finalists. Could prehistory contain an even worse period?
Possibly. Around 74,000 years ago, the Toba super-eruption released enormous quantities of material. It was once proposed that Toba nearly drove humans to extinction. That dramatic claim is now heavily debated.
Evidence from Africa and elsewhere suggests human populations did not all suffer one uniform near-extinction event. Prehistory creates a frustrating possibility. The worst time may have left too few witnesses to describe it. Written history rewards us with detail.
We know what Procopius thought the sun looked like. We can trace plague genomes. For earlier disasters, we have sediment, bone, pollen, ash, and silence. Return to 536.
You are not an emperor or general. You are an ordinary farmer somewhere in a badly affected part of the northern hemisphere. The spring is cold. You plant anyway because refusing to plant guarantees hunger.
The sun rises behind a veil. Growth is slow. By late summer, the grain is thin. There is no scientific explanation.
Perhaps God is angry. Perhaps the end of the world is beginning. Every explanation is terrifying because none produces food. Winter consumes the harvest.
The next year begins with fewer animals and less seed. Then the climate remains unstable. Around 540, the sky receives another volcanic injection. Soon rumors arrive of disease in distant ports.
Then the disease is no longer distant. This is why the best answer is not exactly the year 536. The strongest candidate is the period it opened. If forced to select one calendar year with broad environmental reach, 536 deserves the title.
It abruptly darkened skies across widely separated regions, helped trigger major cooling, damaged harvests, and began a decade of extraordinary climatic hardship. But if the measure is immediate probability of death in a heavily affected population, 1348 may be worse. If the measure is destruction of a people’s population, sovereignty, and world, the decades after European contact in the Americas may be worse. If the measure is civilian exposure to war, famine, and disease combined, parts of central Europe during the Thirty Years’ War may be worse.
If the measure is deliberate human cruelty, the 20th century supplies answers too terrible to rank casually. History refuses to give one clean winner because suffering is local, even when disaster is global. Still, 536 has one uniquely disturbing quality. There was no enemy to defeat.
No wall could stop the atmosphere. No treaty could restore sunlight. Somewhere, perhaps thousands of kilometers away, a volcano had exploded. Its gases rose beyond sight and altered seasons for people who would never know the volcano’s name.
The cause was invisible. The hunger was not. Then, before recovery, the world delivered another eruption and a pandemic. The survivors did what humans always do.
They adapted. They migrated. They shared, hoarded, traded, prayed, fought, buried their dead, and planted again. Civilization continued, not because the period was mild, but because surviving people continued inside it.
What was history’s worst time to be alive? There is no universal answer. But if you want the moment when the natural world seemed to fail across continents, when the sun dimmed without explanation, harvests collapsed, cold returned, another volcano struck, plague followed, and war made every weakness more dangerous, begin in 536. Do not stop at December.
The worst part was that the year ended. The crisis did not.
