Cat populations were substantially reduced during periods of intense persecution, and rodent populations rose accordingly. The historical irony is widely noted: the systematic killing of the primary check on rat populations may have helped create the conditions that allowed the Black Death, which killed roughly one-third of Europe’s population in the 14th century, to spread as devastatingly as it did. The causal link is debated and the picture is not simple, but the irony is real.

Cats spread across the globe through trade networks rather than deliberate transport. Greek and Phoenician traders, Roman legions, Arab merchants, and Chinese traders along the Silk Road all carried grain on ships and caravans. Rodents infested that grain, and cats followed the rodents. Roman soldiers brought cats on campaigns for camp hygiene and companionship.

Viking traders carried cats on Norse vessels, where ship holds full of food created exactly the kind of rodent-attracting environment cats had evolved to exploit. Cats reached Iceland, Greenland, and possibly the coast of North America before formal European exploration began. Domestic and feral cats are estimated to kill between 1 and 4 billion birds and between 6 and 22 billion small mammals annually in the United States alone. These numbers make cats one of the leading human-associated causes of wildlife mortality globally, exceeding window collisions, vehicle strikes, and pesticides combined. The problem is most acute on islands, where prey species evolved without felid predators and lack the fear response to avoid them. The question of whether cats are truly domesticated remains contested. The standard definition of domestication involves deliberate selective breeding producing meaningful genetic change—and by that standard, cats are imperfectly domesticated at best. Its particular profile—independent enough not to demand constant attention, present enough to offer companionship, expressive enough to be interesting, and small enough for confined living spaces—makes it ideally suited for modern urban life. A cat fits an apartment in a way a dog often cannot. A cat can be left alone for a workday in a way that genuinely distresses most dogs. The cat’s story is ultimately the story of an opportunist that got lucky.
