The earliest confirmed firearm in the archaeological record is a small bronze tube known as the Heilongjiang hand cannon, discovered in 1970 in northeastern China and dated to approximately 1288. It weighs about 3. 5 kilograms, has a 25-centimeter barrel, and could be held in one hand. Every musket, rifle, pistol, and machine gun built since descends from that single tube.

The weapon exists only because of a failed experiment centuries earlier. Around the 9th century, Taoist alchemists in China were searching for an elixir of immortality, mixing minerals and powders in clay pots in hopes of producing a substance that would grant eternal life. Instead, a combination of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal produced an explosion. The earliest known written warning about the mixture appears in a Chinese text from around 850 AD, which advised against heating these ingredients together because it would burn down structures and injure people.

By 1044, Chinese military scholarship had moved beyond accident into systematic engineering. The Wujing Zongyao, a military compendium compiled by scholars Zeng Gongliang and Ding Du, included three separate gunpowder recipes with different ratios of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal for incendiary weapons, smoke screens, and detonations. Chinese armies were strapping gunpowder to arrows and launching them at enemy fortifications by 904 AD. Gunpowder alone did not create guns.

The first step was the fire lance, a bamboo tube attached to a spear that blasted a jet of flame for several seconds. The earliest confirmed combat use was at the siege of De’an in 1132, when Song Dynasty defenders used them against Jurchen soldiers scaling the city walls. Later versions packed stones, iron pellets, and scrap metal into the tube, turning the fire lance into an early shotgun. The technology spread westward through the Mongol Empire, which absorbed Chinese engineers and gunpowder expertise as it conquered the Song and Jin dynasties.

By 1267, the English friar Roger Bacon had described gunpowder in a coded passage, and by 1326, the first European depiction of a firearm appeared in a manuscript by Walter de Milemete. The consequences for warfare were immediate and devastating. In 1453, Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II hired Hungarian engineer Orban to build a massive cannon. The barrel stretched over eight meters and required 60 oxen and 200 men to transport.

It could only fire about seven times per day, but each shot hurled a 600-kilogram stone ball. Weeks of bombardment crumbled the Theodosian walls of Constantinople, which had protected the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years. The city fell on May 29, 1453, and with it, the medieval era of fortified castles. European military architects redesigned fortifications into low, thick, star-shaped forts with angled bastions designed to deflect cannonballs.

Early handheld firearms were objectively inferior to bows. A 14th-century hand cannon required the user to pour powder down the barrel, shove in a lead ball, brace the weapon against the chest, and press a burning match to the touch hole while an enemy approached. Reloading took minutes, and accuracy was minimal. An English longbowman could put 12 arrows in the air in the time it took a handgun to fire once.

Although the bow was faster and more accurate, guns offered two decisive advantages. First, penetration: a lead ball could punch through plate armor that arrows could not. The armored knight, dominant on European battlefields for centuries, became killable by almost anyone. Second, training: a master longbowman required 10 to 15 years of practice from childhood, while a peasant could learn to load and fire a gun in weeks.

The gun also terrified horses unaccustomed to the noise, disrupting cavalry charges. The technology evolved quickly. The matchlock, developed around the early 1400s, held a smoldering match in a clamp and allowed the soldier to use both hands to aim while pulling a lever. The matchlock musket became the standard infantry weapon in Europe for nearly 200 years.

In 1575, at the Battle of Nagashino in Japan, warlord Oda Nobunaga arranged 3,000 common foot soldiers with matchlock muskets in rotating volleys behind wooden palisades. The Takeda cavalry, among the most feared mounted warriors in Japanese history, was annihilated charging into organized gunfire. The wheellock arrived around the early 1500s. It used a spring-loaded spinning wheel striking iron pyrite to create sparks, eliminating the need for a burning match.

It was expensive—a single wheellock pistol could cost as much as a horse—but it worked in rain and could be carried loaded. It was also concealable, prompting several European cities to ban wheellocks within city limits over assassination concerns. The flintlock, developed around 1610 and widely credited to French gunsmith Marin le Bourgeoys, used a piece of flint striking steel to shower sparks into the priming pan. It was simpler, cheaper, and more reliable than its predecessors and dominated global warfare for over 200 years.

In 1807, Scottish minister Alexander John Forsyth patented the percussion cap, a small copper cap filled with mercury fulminate that detonated when struck by a hammer, eliminating reliance on flint and loose powder entirely. Rifling, spiral grooves cut inside the barrel that make the bullet spin for greater accuracy, existed in experiments as early as the 1490s but was slow to adopt because bullets had to be hammered down the barrel to fit the grooves. In 1849, French army officer Claude-Étienne Minié solved this with the Minié ball, a conical bullet with a hollow base that expanded on firing to grip the rifling automatically. This allowed a soldier with a rifled musket to reload as fast as one with a smoothbore while hitting targets at 500 meters instead of 75.

The Minié ball made the American Civil War catastrophically deadly. Generals trained in Napoleonic-era tactics ordered mass infantry charges against rifled muskets, and more than 620,000 soldiers died, many killed by technology that battlefield leadership had failed to adapt to. Industrial-scale killing followed. In 1862, American inventor Richard Gatling patented a hand-cranked, multi-barrel weapon capable of firing 200 rounds per minute.

In 1884, Hiram Maxim built the first truly automatic machine gun, which used recoil from each round to cycle the action and fire continuously at up to 600 rounds per minute. At the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, British forces with Maxim guns killed roughly 12,000 Sudanese warriors in a single morning while sustaining fewer than 50 casualties. In 1884, French chemist Paul Vieille developed Poudre B, the first practical smokeless propellant. Black powder produced thick clouds of smoke after a few volleys, blinding soldiers.

Vieille’s formula burned cleaner, generated more pressure, and produced almost no visible smoke, making firearms more powerful, accurate, and concealable. Every modern cartridge traces back to that formula. The firearm collapsed the distance between intention and death to a single finger motion, and with it dismantled the castle, the armored knight, and the feudal assumption that combat required noble blood and years of training.

The alchemist who sought eternal life 1,200 years ago never found it, but the accident he stumbled into outlasted every dynasty and empire that ever used it.
