What Animal Will Humans Domesticate Next?

Domestication is often treated as an ancient achievement, something humans finished thousands of years ago with wolves, cattle, and chickens. But the process never stopped. Right now, animals around the world are being shaped by their proximity to humans, and scientists say some are genuine candidates for becoming the next domesticated species. The key distinction is that domestication is genetic, not individual.

A tame animal is one that has learned to tolerate humans, like the Russian bear named Stepan who reportedly enjoys watching television and hugging people. A domesticated animal, by contrast, is biologically different from its wild ancestors, reproductively isolated and selectively bred over generations. They typically develop smaller heads, floppier ears, and shorter faces, changes tied to the same biology that governs friendliness. The classic demonstration came in the 1950s, when Soviet scientist Dmitri Belyaev selectively bred silver foxes for tameness alone.

Within just a few generations, the foxes not only became friendlier, but also developed floppy ears, spotted coats, and curled tails. They began barking and seeking human attention. None of those physical traits were selected for directly; they came along because they are linked to the same genetic pathways. For an animal to be a domestication candidate, it generally must breed in captivity, eat a flexible diet, possess enough temperament variation to select from, and have social structures compatible with human hierarchy.

Zebras fail spectacularly on the last point. They show almost no variance in aggression, are statistically more likely to injure zookeepers than lions are, and bite without letting go. The fox is considered the closest current candidate. The descendants of Belyaev’s experiment are already sold as pets, and urban fox populations are naturally evolving bolder, less fearful behavior without any deliberate breeding.

City foxes are measurably less afraid of humans than rural ones, better at reading human cues, and more curious. Intentional breeding over a few thousand years could plausibly finish the job. Crows are another serious candidate, though for unusual reasons. They recognize individual human faces, hold grudges, and have been documented leaving gifts for people who feed them.

They teach their young which humans to trust, passing social knowledge across generations. Urban crows already understand garbage collection schedules and have been observed using traffic to crack nuts, waiting at crosswalks in the specific lane where tires will strike the nut at the correct angle. Their major obstacle is that they lack the pack hierarchy that makes humans easy to slot into, but their long-term pair bonds and intelligence suggest selective breeding could overcome that. The capybara already has many of the required ingredients.

The largest rodent on Earth is highly social, lives in groups with complex structures, eats grass, breeds in captivity, and is already kept as a pet in several countries. They are notably calm around humans and famously tolerate other animals climbing on them. The main barriers are their need for regular water access and their remaining wild instincts. A breeding program selecting for human affinity could plausibly produce a recognizable domesticated population within a hundred generations.

The octopus is an uncomfortable candidate, but domestication has never been only about pets. Most domesticated animals in history were food. Octopus are already being farmed in aquaculture programs, largely because global demand outpaces wild catches, and Spanish research institutions have spent years working to close the breeding cycle in captivity. Octopuses have individual personalities, recognize specific humans, and some are curious and playful around researchers.

They also have the temperament variation needed for selection. Their short lifespans, solitary nature, cannibalism, and legendary escape abilities make the logistics brutal, but the core criteria are increasingly met. Deer are a strong agricultural candidate. Reindeer have been herded and managed for thousands of years by indigenous Arctic peoples, and they sit well along the domestication spectrum even if not fully domesticated like cattle.

White-tailed deer in suburban America are already calmer around humans than their ancestors were and have adapted to human environments. Red deer and fallow deer are farmed for meat with existing breeding programs. Their herd instincts and simple diets work in their favor, though their seasonal breeding patterns and dangerous antlers complicate matters. Elephants represent the slowest possible domestication.

Nearly every working elephant in history was wild-caught and tamed through an often brutal process, not genetically domesticated. True domesticated elephants barely exist. Their 22-month gestation, 15-year maturity, and enormous space and food requirements mean a meaningful breeding program would take centuries. Still, researchers note that captive elephant populations in Myanmar and Thailand may already be subtly different from wild ones after generations of captivity, which could represent the very early stages of a process that would be the slowest in human history.

The deeper pattern is that domestication changes both species. Dogs altered human evolution, improving hunting, sharpening our ability to read nonverbal cues, and possibly contributing to the development of theory of mind. Cattle, descended from the terrifying 6-foot-tall aurochs, formed the agricultural foundation that made cities, writing, and mathematics possible. Each new domestication relationship raises new questions, about urban nature, about the line between dog and fox, and about the ethical obligations created when we select which individual animals live and reproduce.

There is one final candidate almost nobody discusses. Wolves. Not dogs, but specific isolated wolf populations that have lived near human settlements for generations. The idea is that in places where wolves learned to coexist rather than flee or fight, passive selection is already occurring.

Bolder, calmer wolves that take food near settlements survive and reproduce more successfully. That is likely how the first domestication happened, not through deliberate choice, but through wolves hovering at the edges of human camps until one day, a human looked at one and decided it could come inside. If that pattern is repeating now, then domestication is not a finished chapter of history but an ongoing gravitational pull between certain species and human civilization. The answer to which animal comes next may simply be all of them, all the ones that can be, and all the ones that are ready.
