It is psychological.
Your nervous system interprets trusted companionship as reduced risk. That interpretation likely stretches back tens of thousands of years. The same brain that once listened for lions now listens for certainty. Sometimes certainty sounds like another person’s breathing.
Sometimes it is the quiet movement of a family member in the next room. Sometimes it is simply knowing someone else is there. The danger changed. The calculation did not.
