Research into whether animals find humans cute is strikingly one-sided. Thousands of studies have examined why people find puppies and kittens adorable, yet almost no scientific work has seriously asked if the feeling runs in reverse. That gap, researchers say, is itself revealing, because the concept of cuteness may not apply to most animal brains at all. The foundation of this research dates to 1943, when ethologist Konrad Lorenz proposed the kinderschema, or baby schema.

He identified a cluster of facial features, a large rounded head, a prominent forehead, big eyes set low on the face, a small nose and a small mouth, that reliably triggers caregiving instincts in adult observers. Lorenz argued this response was not limited to humans looking at human babies, but appeared across many unrelated species whose survival depends on protecting vulnerable young. Modern studies have tested his hypothesis with digitally manipulated photographs. When researchers exaggerate baby schema features in images of babies, puppies or kittens, people consistently rate the altered faces as cuter.
The effect holds across species, and even works when an adult cat’s face is digitally reshaped to resemble an infant’s proportions. When people are asked to rate faces directly, animal faces consistently win, with dogs rated cuter than human babies, cats close behind, and human infants a distant third by one researcher’s description. Cuteness, as Lorenz conceived it, is fundamentally tied to triggering parental instincts toward one’s own offspring, or toward creatures that closely resemble one’s own offspring in shape and proportion. A bird has no evolutionary reason to find a human baby’s face adorable, since human babies were never part of the environmental pressures that shaped bird brains.
For most species, asking whether they find humans cute is somewhat like asking whether a calculator appreciates long division. The domestic dog is the notable exception. In 2015, a Japanese research team led by Miho Nagasawa published a landmark study in the journal Science that directly tested this question. Researchers measured oxytocin, the bonding hormone involved in parent-infant attachment, in both dogs and their owners before and after sustained mutual eye contact.
When dogs gazed steadily into their owners’ eyes, oxytocin levels rose measurably in both simultaneously, and the longer the gaze lasted, the larger the spike in both species. When oxytocin was administered to the dogs through a nasal spray, they increased their gazing behavior further, which in turn drove their owners’ oxytocin levels up again. The researchers described this as a positive feedback loop structurally and functionally similar to the bonding loop between human mothers and their infants. Remarkably, when the same experiment was run with wolves raised by and bonded with human handlers, the effect disappeared entirely.
The wolves did not engage in the same sustained mutual gaze, and their handlers showed no corresponding oxytocin spike. The researchers’ interpretation was that domestication rewired dogs to use a mutual gaze bonding mechanism that across the animal kingdom is normally reserved for parent-infant relationships within a single species. Dogs may have evolved to hijack the biological pathway connecting human parents to their own babies and point it directly at humans instead. This fits with the concept of neoteny, as humans have selectively bred dogs over thousands of years to retain puppy-like features, floppy ears, round faces and large trusting eyes, into adulthood.
Other researchers have pushed back on the 2015 study, raising methodological concerns about hormonal differences between male and female test subjects, whether the dogs and wolves were raised under comparable conditions, and whether the effect might generalize to other caregiver bonding relationships, including between dogs and their own mothers. The broader scientific community regards the finding as important but treats the stronger claim about genuine coevolution with ongoing caution until further replication is completed. Even so, the dog case provides the closest available evidence-based answer. A dog almost certainly does not experience cuteness in the aesthetic sense humans do, but the accumulating evidence suggests its brain has been reshaped across thousands of years to respond to human faces and direct eye contact using the same neurochemical pathway that otherwise drives parental affection and attachment bonding.
A separate thread of research suggests the underlying caregiving trigger might be more widespread. One striking study found that adult female Japanese macaques, when shown photographs of infant versus adult faces belonging to an unrelated primate species, Campbell’s monkeys, spent significantly longer looking at the infant faces. This suggests the mechanism for noticing and responding to baby-like features may be a more broadly conserved feature of primate visual processing, possibly helping primates identify and track vulnerable young of almost any kind. No published study has directly tested whether a macaque finds a human baby’s face appealing, but the finding raises the possibility that human infants, with their round faces and large eyes, might register as biologically salient to certain other primate species.
The full, rich emotional experience of cuteness, however, may only be fully experienced within or closely adjacent to one’s own species. For the overwhelming majority of animal species, there is simply no compelling evidence that they experience anything resembling human aesthetic judgment about human faces. The baby schema response is evolutionarily tuned to recognize one’s own offspring or creatures closely resembling them, not an unrelated upright-walking primate. A shark’s brain, one researcher suggested, does not have the relevant neural machinery installed to even ask the question.
The honest, carefully qualified answer is that almost no animals find humans cute in any sense we would recognize, because most animal brains were never built to ask that question. The one clear exception is the dog, the species that has spent roughly 15,000 years evolving alongside humans, and whose biology appears to have been rewired to respond to human faces and attention through the same hormonal circuitry that drives maternal bonding with a newborn child.
