Roughly 40,000 years ago, long before the first cave paintings, humans began wrapping their feet in animal hide to survive the Ice Age. This conclusion comes not from ancient shoes, which have long since decayed, but from the bones of the people who wore them. In 2005, physical anthropologist Erik Trinkaus of Washington University in St. Louis published a study examining toe bones from early modern humans and Neanderthals across Eurasia.

He found that people living between 100,000 and 40,000 years ago had thick, robust lesser toes built for gripping the ground. But humans from the Upper Paleolithic, starting around 40,000 years ago, had noticeably thinner, weaker toes even though their leg bones remained just as strong. The explanation is mechanical. Barefoot walking forces the toes to grip and flex with every step, building strong bone over a lifetime.
A rigid sole between foot and ground reduces that stress, and the toes weaken. Trinkaus confirmed the pattern by comparing the foot bones of historically barefoot populations with those known to wear heavy footwear. The oldest shoes ever found in hand are much younger than the skeletal evidence suggests early use. In 1938, archaeologist Luther Cressman uncovered dozens of woven sandals in Fort Rock Cave in central Oregon, buried beneath ash from the eruption that created Crater Lake.
Radiocarbon dating placed them between 9,300 and 10,500 years old. Made from shredded sagebrush bark twined into flat soles with a covered toe flap, they show genuine skill and planning. The oldest surviving leather shoe dates to roughly 5,500 years ago. Found in 2008 in the Areni-1 Cave in Armenia, it was a single piece of cowhide shaped around a right foot, laced with leather cord and stuffed with grass.
The design so closely resembled the pampooties of Ireland and the opanki of the Balkans that researchers concluded this construction style persisted essentially unchanged across vast distances and millennia. Around 5,300 years ago, the Iceman known as Ötzi wore footwear that was, by any measure, a masterpiece. His shoes combined a brown bear sole for durability, a deer skin upper, linden bast netting, and hay packed for insulation. The leather was tanned with animal fats and smoke-dried.
Replicas tested in the Alps kept wearers comfortable and dry at temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius. In ancient Egypt, sandals became symbols of power. Tutankhamun’s tomb contained 80 pairs, including a set of solid gold sandals shaped to imitate woven reeds, never meant for walking, and others with pictures of bound enemies painted on the insoles so the pharaoh could symbolically trample his conquered foes with every step. The Romans turned footwear into industrial production.
The caliga, the standard military boot, used an open lattice design that prevented blisters and soles studded with iron hobnails for traction and as a close-combat weapon. At the fort of Vindolanda near Hadrian’s Wall, nearly 5,000 leather shoes have been recovered, including baby booties and women’s slippers that proved women and children lived on the frontier, something centuries of military documents had not revealed. A soldier’s letter from the same site asks his family to send socks and underwear. In China, silk shoes marked imperial status, while the thousand-year practice of foot binding represented the most extreme intersection of footwear and social control in history.
In Japan, the wooden geta and straw zori kept feet above mud and rain. Medieval Europe produced the poulaine, a shoe with toes extending up to 24 inches beyond the foot, stuffed with moss and sometimes chained to the wearer’s knees. The longer the point, the higher the status, and the more impossible walking became. A 2021 study of skeletons from Cambridge cemeteries found that bunions jumped from 6% of the population in the 11th to 13th centuries to 27% in the 14th and 15th centuries, and to 43% among the wealthy buried in high-status sites.
Those with bunions were also significantly more likely to have fractures from falls. Heels began as a military innovation in 10th-century Persia, where cavalry used them to lock into stirrups. When diplomats brought the style to Europe in the late 1500s, aristocrats adopted it as fashion. Louis XIV of France, a short man, wore heels with red soles and restricted that color to his inner circle.
For centuries, shoes had no left or right distinction. Until the mid-1800s, both shoes in a pair were identical, formed on straight lasts, and wearers alternated feet daily to ensure even wear. Left and right shoes only became standard in the 1850s and 1860s with industrial manufacturing. A 1883 patent changed shoes from luxury to necessity.
Jan Ernst Matzeliger, born in Suriname and working in Lynn, Massachusetts, invented the lasting machine, which stretched leather uppers over forms and attached soles. A skilled hand laster made about 50 pairs in a 10-hour day. His machine produced 150 to 700. Matzeliger died of tuberculosis in 1889 at 36, but his invention did for shoes what the printing press did for books.
In 1839, Charles Goodyear accidentally discovered vulcanization, heating rubber with sulfur to create a durable, flexible, silent sole. The silence gave sneakers their name. Keds launched in 1916, Converse released the All Star in 1917, and in 1971, University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman poured liquid rubber into his wife’s waffle iron to create the traction pattern that became the foundation of Nike. Harvard biologist Daniel Lieberman has spent years studying the biomechanics of barefoot versus shod running.
His work shows that barefoot runners tend to land on the middle or front of the foot, while runners in cushioned shoes tend to land on the heel, generating higher impact forces. Habitually barefoot populations have stronger arches, stronger intrinsic foot muscles, and fewer certain foot problems. The foot, denied the work it evolved to do, has responded by getting weaker. The shoe was not invented once in a single place.
The need was universal, the materials varied, the solutions diverse. Every culture facing cold ground, sharp rocks, or thorny terrain arrived at its own answer. Roughly 40,000 years ago, someone wrapped animal hide around their foot, tied it with sinew, stood up, took a step, and kept walking.
